Specific Event Details
Presented by Don Batkins. Learn how people traveled to the Great Lakes from areas east of the lakes before rail connections became common. We'll discuss pre-Erie Canal trips and methods of travel during that time. Then we'll talk about the Erie Canal, with a focus on a family leaving New York for Michigan in 1826 where they bought farm land northwest of Detroit. The talk ends with a brief overview of early locomotives and passenger cars.
