View the 1979 biographical movie Norma Rae, directed by Martin Ritt and starring Sally Field. Based on the true story of Crystal Lee Sutton, the film follows Norma Rae Webster, a factory worker with little formal education in North Carolina who becomes involved in trade union activities at the textile factory where she works after her and her co-workers' health is compromised due to poor working conditions. Field won the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Actress for her portrayal and the film was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.
This film screening is in support of our participation in The Great Michigan Read as we join hundreds of communities in the statewide one-book reading initiative by reading The Women of the Copper Country by Mary Doria Russell. The Great Michigan Read aims to connect us as Michiganders by deepening our understanding of our state, our society, and our humanity.
Presented by the Michigan Humanities Council, with support from Meijer and the National Endowment for the Humanities and a host of other sponsors.
